Combat for Dummies

Discord d3, PvE successes, ability retests, and why we do not run LotNR chops on Discord.

The story belongs to the players. The world will still make hell upon their lives.

BBC uses Laws of the Night Revised with house rulings. In person, we practice the core rules whenever possible. On Discord, the back-and-forth of LotNR chops is not practical, so we run a d3 conversion that keeps the spirit and the bidding.

Discord d3

Rollem / Dice Maiden — 1d3. Defender wins ties.

Tap the die. Same odds as the bots.

Player versus environment

The goal is still LotNR. A storyteller may place alternative mechanics on a scene to keep it kinetic. They will tell you what they are running.

Discord PvE

Bridgeport uses the d3 standard via Rollem and Dice Maiden. Bidding and other MET aspects remain as designed.

1WinRock
2TiePaper / Bomb
3LossScissors

On a tie where equal traits are compared: the Defender wins the test and loses the Trait.

Difficulty and successes

A Difficulty is the number of traits the challenger needs to defeat on a tie. Target numbers still range from LotNR practice. The number of successes needed is based on the probability of Win / Tie / Lose.

On Discord, Successes Needed replaces the retest back-and-forth. It is also the only way an NPC seems to get a hit these days. Ya’ll need to be nerfed.

Ability and situational retests (Discord)

The player can use an Ability to retest once in an attempt to gain one of the X successes needed, or spend the Ability to cancel a success needed.

For each participant, only 1 Ability Retest or Success Cancellation per challenge.

All other retests (item, merit, etc.) are handled as normal and follow the Rule of 4 but Never 6. Example: Awe does not cancel Awe. Only Blasé cancels Awe.

Bot rollers

Rollem: type 1d3 plus an optional label.

Dice Maiden: /r or /roll, then 1d3. Does not support labels.

GreenMinimal

Your presence may make this easier.

YellowModerate

Bad judgment can mean torpor — or worse.

RedExtreme

Results range from very bad to dead.

BlackRoleplay first

Probable death. A sheet will not be enough.
